Happy National Feierdag!
Celebrating the birthday of Luxembourg’s reigning monarch has been a cherished tradition since the late 18th century. In 1961, a fixed date was chosen for this national celebration - 23 June, now known as National Feierdag.
Interestingly, this date doesn’t actually match the Grand Duke’s real birthday! But ever since, Luxembourgers have come together each year on 23 June to honour the occasion with festivities, parades, and a wonderful sense of national pride. And although the official holiday is on 23 June, everyone looks forward to the evening of 22 June (Virowend vum National Feierdag) with fireworks around the country and an all-night party in the streets of Luxembourg City.
This year, there is even an added bonus on 21 June, with a celebration for Grand Duke Henri's 25 years on the throne.
Whether you're near or far, it's a lovely moment to reflect on Luxembourg’s heritage and celebrate together in spirit. 🎉 And here is a throwback to the very first article of National Day series which we did back two years ago right before this platform was launched. It features our alumna Corinne Weis who tells us more about National Feierdag and how it is celebrated.
